Z - No Zoo Better than the Western Plains Zoo

Welcome to our tour of Australia. During the month of April we are going to visit our favourite spots in Australia. Come join us on our walkabout through the land down under.

Yesterday we showed you one of the items on our bucket list in Australia. Click here if you missed that post. Today we conclude our tour with a visit to our favourite zoo.

We have been to many zoos but our favourite is the Western Plains Zoo in Dubbo, NSW. Located about 5 hours from Sydney it is one of the largest zoos anywhere. The circuit around the zoo is 6km/3.8 miles which is much more than most places. Each of the exhibits are huge and give you a sense that you are on safari. Short of going to Africa on Safari this is as close as you will get to that experience. This zoo is a little out of the way from the big city but is well worth the trip.
Cost: Prices are in Australian Dollars
$47 for a 2 day pass ($37 USD).
More Info: Western Plains Zoo Website
Address: Obley Road, Dubbo, NSW (Click link for map)

The zoo is so big that most people drive from exhibit to exhibit. You can also ride bicycles or rent a golf cart like we did. Amanda loved this as the steering wheel was on the "wrong" side.

There is plenty of room for the animals to wander around in their exhibit.

The rhinos are posers and seem to love their photos being taken.

The Giraffe enjoying a nice warm winter day.

One of the Hippos enjoying a nap in the mud.

The zoo has a big variety of animals and is sectioned off into continents based on where the animals are native to.

No aussie zoo would be complete without a kangaroo exhibit.

The king of the jungle (or in this case the zoo) exploring his territory.

Getting Here:
Car: The zoo is a 5-6 hour journey from Sydney.
Air: Dubbo is the closest aiport and is a one hour flight from Sydney. The zoo is a 10-15 drive from the airport.
Train: Dubbo is the closest railway station and is a 7 hour journey from Sydney. The zoo is a 10-15 minute drive from the station.

This concludes our A-Z Challenge tour of our favourite places in Australia. I hope you enjoyed the tour and learned a little more about the land down under. If you missed some of the posts I encourage you to go back and catch up on the ones you missed. Thanks for being part of the tour!

What is your favourite animal at the zoo or one you wish you local zoo had? What are you blogging about today?

  2. That is the nicest looking zoo I've ever seen. Another place I hope my son makes it to while he is down under. It's been a ton of fun touring Australia with you. Cheers and happy Z!

  4. Does it get crowded if a lot of people have rented golf carts to drive around the zoo? I am thinking Disneyland where they have strollers in front of all the popular rides waiting for the people on the rides :) Looks like a cool zoo!!

Congrats on making it to Z! I did enjoy your posts and pictures; I am sure I'll never get to Australia so it was neat to see it through your eyes and your experience with it.

  5. It sounds like a cool zoo, and huge. Sounds a bit like San Diego.

  6. What a beautiful zoo! I actualy never went to any zoos in Australia. I like zoos that are set up like wildlife preserves and the animals get to live in their natural habitats.

  7. Congrats on completing the challenge, I was going to post about zoos for z too, but then I decided not to post anything yesterday.

Western plains zoo looks very cool, I like that they offer golf carts to get from exhibit to exhibit.

  8. I have always wanted to visit that land. Maybe one day. Enjoyed your zoo pictures. Still laughing that "the rhinos are posers." That's hilarious.
Congratulations on completing the A to Z challenge for 2015.
We made it! (I did 5 blogs this year for the series - all on different topics. Whew.)

  10. I love going to zoos, aquariums, and the like. This one looks like one of the better ones with plenty of space for the animals to roam.

Congratulations on finishing A to Z! You did a great job running solo this year and you definitely made me want to visit Australia even more than I already did. Well done!
