Yesterday we spent some time on Virginia's Eastern Shore. Todays stop is a few hours south on North Carolina's Outer Banks. The Outer Banks is a series of several islands located just off the coast of North Carolina. It is a popular holiday destination and has a ton of things to see and do.
We had been once before in 2002 but decided to take a day trip there last May. It was fun to get out and get some fresh sea air and show some of the sights of the Outer Banks to our exchange student.

| Our first stop was the Wright Brothers National Memorial. This was where the first known powered flight took place. Admission is normally $10 per adult. |

| The big rock is where the first flights took off. The smaller rocks in the distance mark how far the first four flights went. The fourth flight went 852 feet and is the last marker way down there in the distance. |

| Our next stop was Jockey's Ridge State Park. This is a series of large series of large sand dune. It is a popular place for tourists and to fly kites as there is usually good winds here. Admission was free |

| A little further south is one of the many lighthouses on the Outer Banks. This is Bodie Island lighthouse. Admission was free here too. |

| It took about 90 minutes to drive north to Corolla NC but it was worth the drive. We had come to see Currituck Lighthouse but also found this park which was a bonus. |

How to get there:
Car: Route NC12 is the main highway through the Outer Banks. It is about 90 south of Norfolk VA and 3 hours to Raleigh NC

Air: Norfolk (ORF) is the closest airport and is about a 90 minute drive. Raleigh NC (RDU) is about a 4 hour drive
Train: The closest stops are Norfolk VA (90 minute drive) and Rocky Mount NC (2.5 hours).
