His: Just Chilling, Watching Netflix.

Today's letter on the A-Z Challenge is "J" ------ here we go!

I have never been a big fan of watching live TV as I hate commercials and having to wait a week for the next episode. Often I would forget what happened so I would be confused and not be able follow the storyline properly. When I was younger I would often go to the local video store and pick up several VHS tapes to view throughout the week. Sadly video stores are almost extinct (read my previous post about that here) but Netflix has pretty much filled that void. For those that don't know, Netflix is a streaming video service that has thousands of different movies and TV shows that you can watch on demand for a monthly fee of $8 per month. They have a wide selection including a few series that they have created themselves.

I like to watch a variety of different types of shows and am always trying new shows since I am paying a flat rate and not a per show watched. I figure that if I try a new show or movie and don't like it then I am not out any extra money, like I would be if I rented it from Redbox or on demand through my cable provider. Right now I am watching several shows including some of my new favourites which include the following:

An Idiot Abroad
This show is a travel documentary, but is unlike any other I have ever seen. Most travel shows only show the good side of traveling and the presenters are always enjoying themselves. This is not the case with this show as Karl is sent to many different popular destinations and is subjected to many unusual and weird tasks during his travels. Karl is like a fish out of water and speaks exactly what he thinks which makes for a hilarious show. His commentary will have you laughing uncontrollably and enjoying every minute of it. Set aside a few hours to watch this as you will likely won't be able to stop at one episode on your first viewing!

Bates Motel
Bates motel is a TV series that is based of the "Pyscho" movies. I have only watched the first few episodes so far but I am really enjoying it as it has a good storyline and it never dull. So far it has been mostly character development but I am really looking forward to seeing how this series moves forward.

Breaking Amish
Breaking Amish follows 5 young people who leave their Amish and Mennonite communities to travel to New York City and see what it would be like to live in the hustle and bustle of the Big Apple. It is a big culture shock to them as they experience things that are normal to most people, but are totally new to them. It was interesting to see how they handled life in the big city and how their communities reacted when they returned home. It was not the best series I had ever seen as there were a few slow parts but it was fun to watch.

Orange is the New Black
I originally read the book when it first came out so I was excited to see that it was coming to the small screen. This series is loosely based on the book which I thought would bother me (as I was hoping it would follow the book more closely) but it didn't since they did such a great job of making an interesting storyline. It follows the adventures of Piper as she spends 14 months in a Federal Prison for a crime she committed a decade earlier. I loved the series and am looking forward to season 2 in June.

The 4400
This series is about 4400 people that were abducted by an alien force over a period of 50 years and were all returned in one day together. They all seemed unharmed and unchanged at first, but after a while they all reveal a unique secret. I have only seen a few episodes so far but it has a great plot and has the promise to be an amazing series. I am looking to seeing happens next in the series.

These are just some of my favourite series that I am watching right now. Most of them were ones that Netflix recommended to me so I am always interested to seeing what else they suggest so I can find something new to watch when I am done viewing all of these.

What is your favourite TV series right now?

Happy Chillin',

  1. I've heard a lot of good stuff about Orange Is the New Black, but I haven't watched that one yet. I'm currently watching Breaking Bad and The Vampire Diaries.

  4. I haven't heard of any of these shows except for the Bates Motel one, but it is always amazing with the number of reality shows out there like Breaking Amish and so many more. I always tell my husband we need our own reality show, but of course one would have to come up with a theme for one.

I haven't tried Netflix yet, but I think its a great service for a really cheap monthly fee. I think the reason we haven't tried it is because we won't get anything else done, LOL.

I don't watch much TV, have it on for background noise or hubby is watching this or that. He likes Person of Interest. I have to admit, sillyh as it is, I like to watch American Idol.

  5. Oh, Netflix sounds amazing! I would love that. I watch some shows online on the specific channel's website, but they are packed with ads (except for the ABC). Come on progress!

  6. Netflix and Tivo are on my too-bad-I-live-abroad list. The travel series and the Orange series sound like a lot of fun. (But how are they gonna get years of series episodes out of a 14-month sentence?) I love horror, but I'm often disappointed by horror series. I'd give Bates Motel a try, but I'm not very patient with character development. I've seen Amish and 4400. Very entertaining!

  7. You must watch Orphan Black. Like now. Like turn the computer off, fire up on Demand, and watch all ten episodes of season one right NOW. Season two starts Saturday. It grips you in the first three minutes, and THAT'S NOT EVEN THE BEST PART!
