His and Her: Super Saturday Snapshots - Kangaroos Abound!

We are continuing with the A-Z Blogging Challenge. It is harder than we thought, but still exciting.

Today we are linking up with Melinda at West Metro Mommy for Super Saturday Snapshots.

Australia is home to many unique animals including the kangaroo which is the subject of today's snapshots. Aussies are used to seeing kangaroos in the wild as they are quite common (I call them Australian deer), but visitors to Australia get really excited when they seem them out in the bush. Kangaroos can be shy in the wild so if you want to get up close it is best to visit one of the many wildlife parks where you can pet them and even feed them!

I love kangaroos! They are so cute - with the hopping and the pointy ears and the tail that they can balance on. So adorable! I was really excited to see kangaroos when we visited in 2006 and I was not disappointed. Sean and his family planned a lot of activities that would let me be around those fun and furry creatures. This past trip, last summer, I kept waiting and waiting ---- and waiting and waiting to see a kangaroo. They just would not come out to play! It was into the second week of our four week trip before I finally saw one. We aren't sure why they stayed so hidden but it was disappointing. Hopefully next time we visit they won't be so elusive!

I took Amanda to Australia for the first time in 2006. This was Amanda's first experience meeting and feeding the kangaroos at the Currumbin Wildlife Park. All of the joeys were either hungry or loved her American accent as they all crowded around.

A group photo with my mum, Amanda, me (Sean) and my sister, Shellie. Most of the kangaroos had filled their bellies but one was still a little peckish and realized that Shellie still had food.

A few days later we went to a different wildlife park and these kangaroos weren't nearly as hungry as we went in the afternoon. We guessed that that had already eaten from all of the other park visitors that had arrived earlier in the day.

Last year we went to Waterways Wildlife Park in Gunnedah to see some kangaroos since we had no luck seeing them in the wild. They had plenty of kangaroos and they had plenty of space to hop around.

Amanda petting the kangaroo at Waterways Wildlife Park.

Amanda feeding the kangaroos at Dreamworld in 2013. Some of the other tourists we being noisy and the kangaroos wouldn't go near them but we were quiet and had no problem getting close and being able to feed them.

After many days of looking for kangaroos in the wild last year we finally got to see a trio of kangaroos in the wild on the farm. We were able to get within about 100ft/30m of them which was pretty cool.

It was a lot of fun to see kangaroos again and being able to get that close to them as there is not many places in America where you can do that.

What animal would you like to see in the wild?

  1. Ah, animals in the wild- they can be such a frustrating experience… I saw three kangaroos today off in the distance, I live in the country and so do see them fairly often. I lived in Canada for 2 1/2 years and always wanted to see a moose in the wild, but I never did.

  3. Love these photos! I had an online forum "pen pal" whose husband was transferred to Alice Springs for a few years. They actually had a pet kangaroo, but gave her a good home when they moved back to U.S. I was also impressed by the lovely birds that she sent me photos of from there. Sigh..Australia and NZ on my hubby's & my bucket list. Never say never...

  4. Wow, I am awed by these shots, especially the ones where the kangaroos come right up, like pets. Thanks for sharing!

And thanks for visiting my blog.

  5. Cool. I'm fascinated to learn that kangaroos are as numerous in Australia as deer in the US.

  6. It's always a thrill to see an animal in the wild. I've seen Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep, moose, mountain goats, and plenty of deer in Colorado and here in Washington State, as well as alligators and crocodiles in Florida, and it's always a delight. Thank you for sharing your kangaroo photos. When we finally make our trip to Australia, we'll include a visit to a wildlife park in our itinerary.

  8. I'm not too fascinated with kangaroos - they look like giant strange rats to me. (I'm awful - sorry!) But I think koalas are adorable. I think I'd like to see a lynx or clouded leopard in the wild. Those aren't seen too often.

  9. That is so cool to have seen and fed a kangaroo! I think it would be fun to see one up that close! Wild animal; bear (I almost typed beer, LOL). We lived in Montana for 8 years and went to Yellowstone a lot of times; never got to see a bear in our time there, saw elk, deer, plenty of buffalo, but no bear.

  10. Thanks for sharing these wonderful photos. I've never seen any 'Asutralian deer'. Hopefully one day I get the chance to meet them. But I've seen lots of Canadian deer, right in my neck of the woods. ;)
