Her Time

This one was hard for me to decide what I would write about. I started and erased this four times before deciding on this one.

T is for Time. There never seems to be enough of it in my world. I am constantly saying that I need more of it. When I write my "Currently" posts at the beginning of the month, I almost always say I need more time to get things done.

A perfect day for me would include time to:
  • work (because I have to and it pays the bills)
  • get everything checked off my to-do list for that day at work
  • hang out with Sean
  • clean/straighten something in my house
  • check Facebook and Instagram
  • read blogs and have time to respond to at least a few
  • knit
  • watch a TV show or two
  • play/cuddle with Alex
  • do my Devotional reading and spend time in prayer
  • go to sleep at a time that would mean I am rested for the next day

What gets in my way? Well, a myriad of things.
  • At work I tend to be too social. I have the gift of gab as my grandmother would say. I come by it honestly (seriously, just ask both my parents!) but it does get in the way of me focusing on the task at hand. But let's be honest, who wants to sit at a desk working every minute of every day when you could be chatting and having a little fun?
  • I am also a horrible procrastinator. My to-do list helps, but I am a procrastinator.
  • At home I am so tired and worn out from work that I struggle to find energy to do anything.
  • Also, at home, I struggle to find the motivation to get up off the couch to do anything.
  • After a long and stressful day, hiding from the work in my tote bag is a defense mechanism. It keeps me sane and puts me behind for the next day - which is an ever-turning and vicious cycle.

So how do I break free and harness the hours of the day that I have so I can be more productive and, let's be honest, happier? *sigh* I honestly don't know. I know this has to feel a little bit like a let-down. I have not figured this one out yet.
  • I tell myself to be less chatty and more focused at work, but I genuinely like the people I work with so chatting with them is fun for me.
  • I don't know how to give less than 100% at work so that I have something left when I get home.
  • The procrastinating thing is something I am working on, but it is a slow process. I want to change that about myself - a lot!

Here's what I am hoping. I am hoping that someone out there has a solution or an answer to my dilemma. How do you manage your hours? How do you make everything fit?

Happy Hump Day - and Thank You, in advance, for all the advice and help! I really value all of your opinions and thoughts. I come to you for help because I know it will be good! Thank you!

  1. Oh I feel your pain. MORE TIME PLEASE. Never seems to be enough, as you say. And isn't it amazing that though we feel that way, we are our worst enemies in using it in the way we think we really want to. Great post. Enjoy the rest of the A to Z challenge. Maria from Delight Directed Living

  2. This is one common woe of many. Time management is the answer. But on some days, I don't feel like anything at all!

  3. I had a pretty good schedule of time management, got everything done I wanted, including work, blog reading, house cleaning, spending time in devotions, exercising, etc., and then 3 years ago we made a major move where hubby quit his job and we moved down to the house he would eventually inherit after his parents passed. When we did the move, he was home now all the time until he started taking on guitar students, and my carefully orchestrated schedule that I had worked out didn't work any more because the time I had for myself in the mornings or at lunch, I didn't have any more because he was there. (I work from home).

So I'm still tweaking time and have it pretty much worked out, but I get up at least 1 hour to 1-1/2 hours earlier than he does to get my devotional reading/computer time in, then we exercise, have breakfast, start work, lunch, afternon work, then I have free time in the evenings until he gets home where if it is my turn to make dinner I fit that in, then after dinner spend time on computer. I don't clean any more (long story, I'm on strike from it) so don't have to worry about that.

Take beby steps not to procrastinate; set a limit how long you'll spend on line or talking with friends at work and then stick with it, especially if you are finding you are bringing work home to do.

  4. Glad I am not the only one who finds it hard to be motivated off the sofa. I'm a stay-at-home mom so I try not to get on the sofa during the day, but when the family is home in the afternoon/evening and I get on that sofa (or my chair) it is hard to get back up! I, too am a procrastinator. Some days I don't accomplish a lot. The thing I do is to make lists, as you mention. I make sure that my lists are things that I can definitely accomplish that day. I don't get over ambitious!

  5. The couch is my Achilles heel! I find that if I even go near it after school my whole evening is shot. I am a to do list person, like obsessive so perhaps this will help or not everyone is as crazy as I am...it goes either way. I make a week long to do list for the following week at school every Friday, everything I need to accomplish and divide it up between the days knowing when I have more time than others. I don't always follow it exactly but I do get everything accomplished without staying late. I keep it posted on my desk and get off on highlighting things off my list. At home I also make a week to do list and divide up the tasks by days but I try never to put more than 3 or 4 things on each night cause I know that isn't realistic. I also schedule in 15 minutes every morning to read blogs cause it makes me happy. To do lists/self pleasure is all about balance and I never feel like I get there but I certainly hope this helps!

  6. More time is something we can always use! It's amazing how quickly it slips by. Even with the best intentions I often barely make a dent in my to-do list every day. Great post for the letter T!
